Fancy Nancy
Apparently, after a little research, Fancy Nancy is super popular with kids. It’s both a series of books and an animated series by Disney. There are also various Fancy Nancy related toys.
We randomly grabbed Fancy Nancy Hair Dos and Don’ts at the library. It was the first time we’ve encountered Fancy Nancy, and we liked the book. The illustrations are fantastic, colorful. Life-like drawings. There’s a lot of details and energy to the drawings.
The writing is simple. It is in the style of “see Dick run.” But for a little one, it is still a good story, and it seems like someone out there believes that style can help little ones learn to read. We did like that throughout the book there are words that Fancy Nancy uses that are then defined within the story. Seemed like a good learning opportunity (it is what we normally do but it was fun to see it in the text of the book.) While there were several times my little one exclaimed “I know that!” I want to believe there are other times that we’ve added a word or two to my little one’s vocabulary.
Fancy Nancy Hair Do’s and Don’ts (2011): The only caution I have here is the story could put it in your little one’s head that he or she can cut their own hair…
Cautions: The best way to think about the cautions and the strengths is to read comments on the individual stories above.
