Miss Sally Ann and the Panther
This story is a tall tale linked to Davey Crockett. In the fictional stories of Davey Crockett Miss Sally Ann becomes his wife. But honestly, for little ones, this story is just a bit weird. (Like many tall tales.) Part of it is scary for little ones. Half of the story is violence, a fight between Sally Ann and the panther. There are several aspects of the story that don’t follow the laws of nature or reality. (Again, like most tall tales.) These are all things I don’t want my little one exposed to until my little one’s brain is out of the rapid development and growth of the first years of life and thus can recognize reality and make believe better. We have found out that exposure to these things to early on can cause nightmares and if they trigger nightmares, I am fairly certain they negatively affect other aspects of brain and personality development.
On a positive note, after they fight for a while, in the end the Sally Ann is kind to the panther and as a result they become friends.
However, most of the story is difficult to explain to a child that is still figuring out reality. An older child might find it entertaining, but for little ones, it’s not really a necessary book to read.
Cautions: Violence and fighting, aspects contrary to reality, a very scary panther.
