Poppleton
This book was recommended by our pre-k teacher - who by the way has A LOT of experience finding good books for little ones. And this one did not disappoint.
Poppleton is a pig that moved from the city to a small town and lives out his new life finding new friends and new activities. There are three stories in the book we read, stories of Poppleton living his day with his friends and pursuing his interests - all stories that helped my little one think through life and what people do and pursue.
It’s written well for its audience, little ones that are just starting to read or can’t read but are wanting to read. It has the simple sentence structure and at various times the repetition that is generally seen as helpful for early readers.
The illustrations are drawn realistically, but in an anthropomorphic style (matching the story, of course.) Though it could be stronger, the illustrations are drawn well enough to read some body language and see some emotions.
Overall, this is a great book, and being a series, we assume there are other great books in the series, but, it does not make the favorites because they are simply descriptive stories of Poppleton’s days and there isn’t a strong message or anything insightful or powerful taught through the stories.
Cautions: For the most part, Poppleton demonstrates good behavior. He finds and builds friendships, lives an active life. But there is a time or two when Poppleton behaves in a way that I would not want my little one to behave; however, they aren’t the focus of the story and Poppleton, though it is not explicit, seems to recognize it wasn’t good behavior.
